The Confirm Centre for Smart Manufacturing is an SFI Research Centre which is funded by Science Foundation Ireland and industry to a value of €47 million, making it one of the largest new research and development centres in Ireland. The manufacturing sector is the second largest employer in Ireland and accounts for 24 per cent of total economic output - €110 billion in exports. The SFI Confirm Research Centre is supported by 42 Industry partners. These partners include technology providers, and end users from the Multi-National Corporation (MNC) and Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) sectors across Ireland.
The SFI Confirm Research Centre is a consortium led by University of Limerick including the Tyndall National Institute, University College Cork, Cork Institute of Technology, National University of Ireland Galway, Athlone Institute of Technology, Maynooth University and Limerick Institute of Technology. The Centre will comprise of more than 200 researchers in smart manufacturing, including 106 new appointments once fully staffed.
The Centre aims to transform Ireland’s manufacturing industry to become a world-leader in smart manufacturing. Smart manufacturing optimises production systems through enhanced sensorisation, networking machines, products, vehicles and people, adding intelligence and enhancing information technology. These new technologies will be at the heart of the factories of the future, increasing product line adaptability, enabling real-time decision-making, shortening supply-chains, and speeding up the development of new innovations to produce higher-quality goods at reduced costs across all industry sectors. The SFI Confirm Research Centre will be revolutionary for Irish manufacturing competitiveness, delivering the technological advances and expertise for a smart manufacturing innovation ecosystem, enabling companies to compete within the rapidly changing global landscape, and boosting Ireland’s reputation as a leading international manufacturing location.
The SFI Confirm Research Centre at UCC is hosted within the School of Computer Science and Information Technology and is located in the Western Gateway Building in UCC.

Applicants should hold a good honours undergraduate or Masters degree in computer science, computer engineering, telecommunications, or other relevant research areas. Ideally, applicants will be able to demonstrate an interest in both theoretical analysis and practical network and system design skills, with a keen interest in wireless networked systems, cyber-physical (manufacturing) systems, industrial Internet of Things and related areas. We are especially interested in candidates with knowledge of computer network design, simulation and analysis, wireless sensor networks, cyber-physical system design and analysis, and 5G network design for machine type communication.
