Call for a PhD Researcher

By order of the Rector of Universidade Nova de Lisboa, issued on February 7th 2019, and in accordance with the Decree-Law nº 57/2016 of 29 August, with the amendment introduced by Law 57/2017 of 19 July, ITQB NOVA opens a call for a PhD Researcher, in the scope of a project financed by FCT, entitled “Iterative Laboratory-Computational Evolution of Bacterial Ligninolytic Enzymes”, ref. PTDC/BII-BBF/29564/2017.

We seek candidates who want to get involved in a multidisciplinary project focused in the application of iterative laboratory-computational evolution methodologies towards enhanced efficiency of bacterial ligninolytic enzymes. The work involves the in-depth biochemical and biophysical characterization of enzyme hits and evolutionary intermediates. The aim is to identify structural and functional determinants of substrate specificity, to track evolutionary trajectories, recognize the dynamics and constraints of enzyme evolution and enlarge the tool-box of biocatalysts that targets components of lignocellulose, supporting the bio-based economy vision of the XXI century. The project partners are Fátima Lucas and Emanuele Monza from Zymvol Biomodelling, focused in computer-aided enzyme engineering, and Tiago Cordeiro and Carlos Frazão from the Dynamic Structural Biology and X-Ray Structural Biology Laboratories at ITQB, respectively.

Academic Qualifications: PhD in Biochemistry

Candidate required qualifications:

• PhD in the field of Protein Biochemistry, in the areas of Enzymology, Biotechnology, Structural Biology, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics or similar;

• Proficiency in English, written and spoken;

• Solid experience in scientific research activities evidenced by publication in international peer-reviewed journals;

• Solid experience in scientific dissemination activities evidenced by oral or poster communication in international conferences;

• Experience in national and international scientific collaborations;

• Experience in the supervision or co-supervision of Master or PhD students;

• Interest in science communication outreach.

Category and applicable legislation: PhD Researcher, salary index to the Single Salary Table (TRU) level 33, approved by Decreto-Regulamentar nº 11-A/2017, 29 November.

It is foreseen that the contract starts in June 2019.
