Context and valorization for EDF: in many cases found on electric production sites, obtaining an hydrophobic surface may be of positive technical impact. EDF R&D has initiated several research works on this topic, involving different hydrophobic coatings (polymer films, filming amines, silicon resins) with industrial applications like:
- Contamination prevention of surfaces (BR pool walls, tools…)
- Corrosion prevention of circuits
- Scaling prevention of aero-cooling
- Enhancement of the condensers efficiency
- Prevention of clogging and icing of wind turbine wans and heat pumps…
On the general point of view, these studies put in evidence the efficiency of these coatings but also their poor lasting. That needed frequent renewals and also sometimes some innocuity problems. From this fact, it has been decided to study the possibility of a lasting hydrophobic surface in aggressive environments (high temperature, corrosive environment, abrasion).
Description and objectives of the PhD: The hydrophobic character of a surface comes from a combination of physical (topography) and chemical (materials) effects. The observation of natural systems (leaves, wings, legs of insects) show that different morphologies of the micro-asperities present on such natural systems may impart hydrophobic properties to the surfaces. The proposed PhD will consist into the studding, in a first part, of these natural surfaces (biomimetic approach), to understand the origin of the hydrophobic character and to propose surface design to access, on a theoretical point of view, to super-hydrophobicity (microfluidic calculations may confirm this approach). In a second part, the PhD student will have to produce the surface morphologies by femtosecond laser texturing. Finally, super-hydrophobicity of surfaces will be experimentally tested, and also its efficiency and its lasting in the context of industrial applications.
PhD conditions: This PhD will be hold between the Laboratoire de Tribologie et Dynamique des Systèmes (LTDS) in Ecole Centrale de Lyon and the EDF R&D center. The work of the student will be shared between the ECL site and the EDF site of Les Renardières. Femtosecond laser texturing experiments will be realized in MANUTECH site in Saint-Etienne. The candidate will be in a scientific high level environment in the domains of surface texturing and super-hydrophobicity.
