The project aims at using highly active catalysts and easy catalytic methods for making more efficient flame retarding compounds, based on the element P. Such compounds, in particular with P-N bonds, are highly desired to replace brominated flame retardants which are in the process of being phased out in an increasingly strict regulatory context.
As a first approach to reach this aim, Lewis acidiccatalysts for exchange reactions of simple phosphate ester precursors with N-nucleophiles (likeanilines) will be studied. In particular, solid catalysts are envisioned tofacilitate product workup. We will seek to establish relationships between the catalyst composition and structure, and the catalytic performance. Besides, the fate of the different flame retardants will be evaluated in solvent-basedrecycling and reprocessing operations. It is ultimately desired to suggest new, fully recycleable flame retardant additives that can also perfectly survive throughout many physical recycles of the plastic material.
