We are looking for a highly motivated student to obtain a PhD degree in Life Sciences starting in 2020 or 2021. The candidates require an excellent Master degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or Biotechnology.
The IGBMC is a leading European center for biomedical research and provides superior infrastructures of facilities and platforms. The team of Jocelyn Laporte and Johann Bohm is composed of 20 members with different and complementary expertise (www.igbmc.fr\Laporte). It is an international team and the work language is English. French speaking is not a requirement.
We are interested in the genetics and physiopathology of congenital myopathies, and we aim to develop therapeutic proofs-of-concept. The Master/PhD project addresses tubular aggregate myopathy (TAM) and Stormorken syndrome (STRMK), two clinically overlapping multi-systemic disorders affecting skeletal muscle, platelets, spleen, skin, and the immune system. We discovered that TAM/STRMK is caused by abnormal calcium balance (Böhm et al., AJHG 2013, https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23332920/?from_term=b%C3%B6hm+stim1&from_sort=date&from_pos=8), and we recently generated a faithful animal model recapitulating the human disorder (Silva-Rojas et al., HMG 2019, https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30576443/?from_term=b%C3%B6hm+stim1&from_sort=date&from_pos=2).
We now want to assess the efficacy of different therapeutic approaches, including genetic crossings with other mouse lines, AAV-mediated modulation of calcium homeostasis, and screening of pharmacological compounds. TAM/STRMK cell and animal models are available in the laboratory, and we have established a panel of multi-disciplinary techniques and approaches to investigate the physiology of muscle and other tissues, and to evaluate the efficacy of the different therapeutic approaches. The expected results of the project are of high scientific and medical impact.
Strasbourg is the capital of the European Union, lies in the heart of the continent, and is a cosmopolitan and animated city. Germany is only a few minutes away by walk, and Paris can be reached within 2 hours by train.
