Introduction

The mission of the Department of Public Health of the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp (ITM) is to conduct public health research of international standing, provide postgraduate education of high quality and engage in service delivery with the ultimate goal to advance global health. The department is organized in multidisciplinary research groups, including public health specialists, epidemiologists, social scientists and health economists. The Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) group’s objective is to contribute to the improvement of sexual, reproductive, and maternal health mainly (but not only) in low resource settings, through linking scientific research, advanced education, policy support and capacity-strengthening. We use quantitative, qualitative and mixed method inter-disciplinary approaches (e.g. epidemiology, sociology, anthropology, psychology, demography) that explain risk and vulnerability as evidence base for improving outcomes.

Your role

  • You will work on the group’s core research projects in the domain of maternal, reproductive and sexual health, in particular issues related to improving intrapartum and postnatal quality of care and improving adolescent sexual and reproductive health in low-resource settings.
  • You will develop your own research lines, including by leading and contributing to research grant applications.
  • You will contribute to education and capacity building activities of the group in the domain of maternal and reproductive health.
  • You will report to dr. Lenka Benova and collaborate with other research groups within ITM and partners outside ITM, including partners in low- and middle-income countries.

Benefits

The ITM is an open and international campus where staff, students and researchers work on new international health challenges. We strive for excellence, integrity, specificity and efficiency. Your assignment contributes to our mission. We value human dignity and diversity, academic creativity and a critical spirit, solidarity and cooperation, and the well-being of employees, students, patients and clients. Together we ensure a pleasant working atmosphere with attention to work-life balance and opportunities for training. We offer you:

  • A full-time contract of 2 years, renewable (the position is budgeted for 3 years).
  • Starting date: as soon as possible in 2020.
  • A salary set according to the pay scales of ITM and the Flemish universities and to your work experience with supplementary benefits: a public transport subscription and/or bicycle fee, private pension scheme and meal voucher subscription.
  • An immigration and relocation assistance package.
