THE CENTRE

Centro Cardiologico Monzino (CCM) is a highly specialised research and care institute focusing on the heart and its vessels. Founded in 1981, it is the first hospital in Europe exclusively dedicated to heart care and is accredited by the Italian National Health Service as an ‘Istituto di Ricovero e Cura a Carattere Scientifico’ (IRCCS). As an IRCCS, CCM pursues basic, clinical and translational cardiovascular-centred research, as well as research in health service organisation and management. Today CCM is joined with the European Institute of Oncology (IEO) forming a centre excellence, which reinvests all profits back into research and innovation in the management of two major pathologies: cancer and cardiovascular diseases. CCM is home to 13 independent research units focused on solving major cardiovascular research problems in strict conjunction with the clinical research developed by specialist nurses, percussionists, cardiologists and heart surgeons.

THE UNIT

The Unit of Vascular Biology and Regenerative Medicine (UVBRM) works to develop new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies to treat cardiac and peripheral vascular diseases. Research projects are principally focused on cell-biology of progenitor cells as well as cellular models of genetic-based cardiovascular diseases. Cellular and molecular biology as well as animal models are developed to reinforce bench-to-bedside translation and clinical activities. UVBRM also has a long-standing interest in clinical studies of cardiovascular regeneration and precision medicine.

THE GROUP

Within UVBRM, the iPSC Group is specifically devoted to the development of induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-based tools in cardiovascular research. Specifically, the iPSC Group has a dual mission to provide core services to internal and external researchers and performs active lines of research focused on modelling multiple types of cardiovascular diseases suitable for modelling with iPSC e.g. Duchenne’s and Becker’s dystrophin-associated cardiomyopathies.

Overall this work is conceived within the framework of a complete clinical and genetic characterisation of the source donors, according to the principles of precision medicine. The iPSC Group’s currently active research tracks are:

  1. Preclinical screening of endocannabinoid system modulators for cardiomyopathy.
  2. Identification of subtle discerning determinants of dystrophin-associated cardiomyopathy severity.
  3. Modelling atrial fibrillation with cardiomyocytes derived from iPSCs.
  4. Evaluating the roles of non-myocytes in genetic cardiomyopathies.
  5. Developing advanced in vitro model systems of dystrophin-associated cardiomyopathy.

THE ROLE*

Initially, your key responsibilities will be centred on maintaining and differentiating the iPSC cell lines and working with other members of the Unit/Centre to supply their requirements for iPSC lines. You will also be heavily involved in the day-to-day lab organisation and management of the Group’s work. During this early period, there will be flexibility to adapt your role to suit your experimental strengths and career aspirations, within the iPSC Group’s overall program and direction.

*Start date/duration: Mid March 2020 (12 months with potential for extension).

Salary agreement will be made during the personal interview stage.

Centro Cardiologico Monzino is an equal opportunity employer.

THE CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate for this position will have the following practical experience and interpersonal skills-set:

- Completed a Master's or PhD degree in biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, biotechnology, pharmacology, biomedical engineering or similar disciplines.

- Must have excellent practical experience of human iPSC cell-culture, characterisation, and differentiation (cardiac-relevant lineages are preferable); molecular biology techniques (qPCR, cloning, etc.); ELISA assays; western blot; biochemical assays; FACS; cell imaging systems (e.g. Zeiss, Operetta or IncuCyte).

- Experience in researching the endocannabinoid system, microelectrode array measurements and assessing calcium dynamics (IonOptix platform) are strong advantages.

- High level of English language skills (at least B2-C level), the iPSC Group’s working language is English.

- B driving licence is an advantage.

- High level of motivation, initiative, flexibility, and ability to work well in a cross-functional international Group.

- As a person, you like to be challenged, are organised and reliably independent, show attention to detail, interested in acquiring new skills, have high levels of drive, enthusiasm, and commitment.

- You must have the willingness to work on weekends regularly (the iPSC Group operates on a 1 in 4 weekend-rota) and be flexible to travel to conferences/collaborating labs.

THE APPLICATION*

We are looking forward to receiving your online application (in English) which should contain the following documents:

- A cover letter setting out what attracts you to the position.

- A detailed curriculum vitae.

- Name and addresses of at least two referees.

*Deadline for applications: 29/02/2020.

LIVING IN MILAN

Milan is a spirited and surprisingly green international city with plenty of hidden surprises such as quiet cobblestoned streets just a short walk from fast-paced ultra-modern Porta Nuova district and the Navigli canals designed by Leonardo da Vinci. What makes Milan interesting compared to other cities? Milan is truly vibrant and embraces all parts of life: rewarding work, a paradise for coffee lovers and followers of design, fashion, football, and cultural activities. Accommodation costs are in-line with other large European cities. Milan has an extensive, well-functioning and cheap public transport system (less than €1 per day for an annual ticket for employees), fabulous reasonably-priced restaurants (€30 for a 3-course meal with a beverage) and many international cinemas (€3 off-peak prices).
