Professor in Micrometeorology and land-atmosphere exchange
Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management
Faculty of Science
University of Copenhagen
The Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management, Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen, invites applications for a professorship in micrometeorology and land-atmosphere exchange.
The position aims at strengthening research and teaching in physical geography and geoscience with a specific emphasis on micrometeorology and the understanding of energy, water and element exchange between the land surface and the atmosphere. The professorship will in particular be responsible for ongoing and new activities related to micrometeorological measurements and quantification of land surface-atmosphere exchange. This includes existing national and international flux measurement and monitoring networks in which the department takes part and is responsible for measurement sites in Denmark and Greenland.
As a successful candidate, you must have a background in measurement and/or modelling of exchange processes between the land surface and the atmosphere. We expect a track record of research within several of the following subjects:
- Land-atmosphere exchange of greenhouse gases and other climatically relevant trace gases in natural, agricultural and/or urban ecosystems
- Hydrological cycling between the land surface and the atmosphere
- Land surface energy balance and exchange of energy between the land surface and the atmosphere
- Impacts of climate change on micrometeorology
- Upscaling of micrometeorological measurements and/or use of micrometeorological measurements for dynamic downscaling of large-scale data
In depth experience and affinity with established micrometeorological techniques (e.g. flux measurements with eddy covariance technique) is required including a clear interest in development of new measurement techniques, expansion of application areas and integration and interaction with modelling and scaling approaches.
As full professor, you are expected to be an internationally recognized researcher that has contributed significantly to the research field. You should have demonstrated good ability for attracting national and international research funding as well as having experience with research leadership, including mentoring of early career researchers.
You are required to have university level teaching experience, documented teaching competencies and must be able to explain and reflect upon your own teaching practice and portfolio. Formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen teacher training programme for assistant professors is required. Moreover, you are expected to have shown leadership in developing and implementing educational programmes within the research field.
Besides conducting own research, you are expected to initiate and conduct significant research applications and to drive and inspire the development of the research field within the department, and to explore the cross-disciplinary potential within the geography, geoscience, nature and urban research fields of the Department and within the University of Copenhagen. You must teach, supervise, prepare and participate in examinations, conduct assessment tasks, grant applications, and research management such as supervision and training of research fellows and other staff. You will also contribute to the development and execution of continued education programmes for non-university partners in government, civil society and the private sector. Further, you must take a responsible role in constructive implementation of department strategies, wellbeing and collaboration at the department, take part in department forums, committees and working groups and initiate and take part in scientific and social events.
Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, original scientific production at an international level, including contributions to developments in their field, as well as their documented teaching qualifications. Managerial and out-reach qualifications of applicants including ability to attract external funding will also be considered.
Six overall criteria apply for professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for an overall assessment of the candidates. Furthermore, each candidate must be assessed according to the specific requirements stated in the job advertisement.
Your work place will be the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management (IGN), which conducts research and education on the past, present and future physical, chemical and biological environments of the Earth and their interactions with societal and human systems to provide candidates and research in support of sustainable future solutions for society. We value scientific interactions among colleagues, cross disciplinary interactions and care for the early career scientists. Further information on the Department can be found at http://www.science.ku.dk/english/about-the-faculty/organisation/. The professorship will be established within the Research Group for Terrestrial Ecosystem Analysis in the Section for Geography. Inquiries about the position can be made to Head of Department Claus Beier, email@example.com or head of Geography Ole Mertz firstname.lastname@example.org.
The position is open from 1 November 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The University wishes our staff to reflect the diversity of society and thus welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.
